Board Meeting Notes - April 5, 2006

The monthly board meeting of the Media Communications Association was called to order on Wednesday April 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Marie Calendars in Irvine.  Those who attended were Dennis Backer, Larry Goldsmith, Travis, Patricia Shanks, John Primm, Tina Wilson, Gary Stone, Grace McKay and Emmett Kessel.

After the minutes of the previous meeting were approved, Emmett gave the treasurer’s report and said that there was $3600 in the treasury. After that was totaled, there had been $600 put in the account from national for membership.

Our President John Coleman mentioned that we needed to form a committee to pass out ballots for our June elections. He asked for volunteers to form a nominating committee. Tina Wilson volunteered and said that she would talk with Patricia Shanks and ask her to join her on this committee, John Coleman mentioned that we especially needed people who would be interested in the positions of President elect and Vice President. Both people would have to be national members. The fact that we need board members at large was also mentioned along with a programming committee, campus liaison committee and web site and PR committees.

We discussed possible locations for future meetings, and John mentioned the possibility of Costa Mesa Recording studios. We discussed talking with them about possibly hosting the April meeting. John mentioned that he would talk with the people at KOCE for a location possibility down the road.

The next topic of discussion was regarding the pod casting of our meetings. Dennis Backer made a motion to send Grace McKay to a chamber meeting about pod casting to look in to the matter further. Emmett  seconded the motion. Travis suggested the possibility of asking every member to take their turn to do a one minute video each month for pod casting and that there could possibly be awards given out every two months. It was agreed that these possibilities would be explored further.

Patricia mentioned that we need more promotion, marketing and publicity of our future events and meetings in order to generate interest and in order to bring more people in to the organization. Dennis suggested making cell phone digital camera recordings. He volunteered to be on a committee to promote a cell phone and digital camera video contest. It was felt that we need to have more educational meetings to help people learn about this new technology that we have in our digital age. John Coleman proposed that we agree to do this and that we would be willing to form committees to develop rules and promotional ideas. Patricia agreed to chair a committee and come back with committees, rules and dates, scheduling a cell phone and digital video contest. Patricia felt that we need to have our meetings be geared to things that people can relate to and more things that they can do to increase productivity in their businesses. Some possible suggestions of topics for future meetings were how to make that video work for you, the possibility of  a speaker from the International Web Casting Association, video production without a script, and documentary film making.

John Primm mentioned that he would like to see members sending more articles in to the Blast about what they have been doing and that they could send them directly to him. Grace and Larry Goldsmith mentioned that they were working together on the web site.

John Coleman mentioned the possibility of doing our own film race, and Dennis said that we would need someone to take charge of that, and Grace said that she would explore that possibility.

Then we discussed the fact that the MCA-I is sponsoring the MAOC awards night at the Newport Beach Film Festival, and John Primm mentioned that as a sponsor of the awards meeting, that we still needed to find two camera people, and a director for Friday the 28th, and someone to play back the video tape.

Dennis mentioned the fact that we need to  recruit sponsors for our MCA-I chapter and that they would in turn receive exposure on our web site. The meeting was adjourned at 8:35.
